Denyse McDonald: Currong Comestibles

Denyse McDonald is an ex-New Yorker and the Owner of Currong Comestibles.

She originally came to Australia as a corporate employee some 20 years ago. Now married, Denyse considers herself as much of a Sydneysider as a New Yorker and Skin I'm In Enterprises is pleased to feature her as the Q&A for our May edition.

What was the inspiration for opening your business?

There were two sides of actually starting the business. Firstly I love to cook and losing myself in preparing a dish is a great way to ‘chill out’. I can be creative and get feedback with other people in a matter of hours, which I love.

Why Every Small Business Should Spare Time for a Mentor:

In a business mentoring relationship, a seasoned business owner meets with a new or potential business owner one-on-one to give advice, focus objectives, or simply boost morale. The relationship can be a paid arrangement organised through a business support group, or free advice from a local business expert. Either way, there is strong evidence that mentoring hugely benefits small businesses:

- 70% of small businesses that receive mentoring survive for 5 years or more, which is double the rate compared with non-mentored entrepreneurs;

Let’s get straight to the point: if you have any hope of building a successful business, then you must be able to answer this question: what makes your company different from everyone else? The answer you give is vital, not only to your success, but it will be a critical factor in determining whether your prospective client wants to use you above everyone else!

The problem is this, once the ‘be your own boss’ illusion fades, and you’ve started in business to fulfil your needs and not those of your marketplace, you enter the dreaded world of commoditisation and very soon your business becomes what you wanted to avoid in the first place: it becomes a ‘job’! You want your business to fulfil a need, not because you need a job.
