FOR US BY US

SATURDAY 20TH OCTOBER 2018

We as a people are the African Diaspora.

A global community taken from our homeland of Africa centuries ago and dispersed in multiple destinations across the world.  The USA, Caribbean, UK, Brazil, Europe and Mauritius to name a few.  Each of us share a common bond with the place where we originated.

Seeking to bring our diaspora together in celebration of the skin we are in and to acknowledge those among us who have migrated far and wide across all continents, including Australasia, Skin I'm In is proud to introduce to you,  our 'One Diaspora' Gala event.  As a diaspora, we are stronger when joined and united.

Collaborating with graphic design house Studio Badu, we present a night that will leave you feeling inspired and empowered.

The Mayfair Ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Hotel has been reserved exclusively for our pleasure and their doors will open to welcome us to a memorable night of black excellence.

This is our signature event. An event that collectively celebrates the diaspora in such a way that doesn’t exist anywhere else in Australia.

We have gathered a collective of amazing women to help make this event even more special and we do so in support and recognition of the #TimesUp movement which shines a light on the sexual harassment of women across the globe.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is an event ‘for us, by us’.  A 5-star night which includes fine wines, hors d'oeuvres, exquisite food and entertainment.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

ADE HASSAN

FOUNDER OF NUBIAN SKIN

Nubian Skin was founded by 33 year-old British-born Ade Hassan, MBE.

To quote Ade, “My nude isn’t the nude I see in shops. Despite the reality that women of colour have the same needs as all women when it comes to lingerie and hosiery, the industry simply doesn’t cater to us.  So, I thought, it’s time to rethink the definition of nude”.

Ade brought a truly innovative product to the market.  Nubian Skin managed to do something that had an impact beyond itself, and redefining ‘nude’, and making the term more inclusive meant that Nubian Skin has had a huge influence, with many parts of the industry realising the need to be more inclusive.  Testament to this are the milestones she has achieved.  Being featured in some form in every major fashion magazine; supplying the wardrobe of major productions in the West End and on Broadway, and being selected to provide the underpinnings for the Beyonce Formation Tour!

Last year, Ade was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace for services to fashion.  The award was made in recognition of Ade’s commitment to her mission to redefine nude, and the impact she has consequently made on the fashion industry.

artwork

one diaspora artwork

The artwork seen throughout the 2018 gala branding draws inspiration from geography and storytelling to illustrate a 'One Diaspora' through symbolism and modern hieroglyphic language. Centred around a journey/movement through the many countries (land/sea) that make up the African diaspora; we celebrate our diversified and colour-filled representation of oneness working in harmony as a global community.
