Rise, Reflect, Reset: 2024

Abundant greetings on this special evening,

As we approach the dawn of 2024, a year brimming with promise and new beginnings, some of us eagerly anticipate the opportunity to embrace what lies ahead, while others may feel a sense of trepidation about the uncertainties that the future holds.

Since 2020, the enduring impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has continued to shape our lives in various ways. Over an extended period, I sought solace by withdrawing from the world in my own way. This was a challenging feat as a mother, but somewhat alleviated by the periods of lockdown endured in Melbourne at the height of the pandemic. Even for someone like me with a natural inclination towards solitude, the need to retreat felt undeniably necessary.

Shifting focus to Skin I’m In, 2020 also marked the suspension of our annual ‘One Diaspora Gala.’ However, we are actively planning for its triumphant return in 2024. Now more than ever, Skin I’m In is committed to providing support to the African diaspora in their professional and entrepreneurial endeavours, aspiring to be a greater source of inspiration for a younger generation coming up behind us. Currently, we are undergoing a transformative shift to operate as a not-for-profit organisation, expanding our ability to assist more comprehensively.

On a personal note, I am navigating the ending of a pivotal chapter in my life. This experience is further compounded by the loss of both my father and a cherished friend, who passed away within a mere two months of each other. A complex blend of betrayal, grief, and sadness are all interwoven elements of that loss. It has been beyond painful and the path for greater healing is still unfolding.

Recently, I posed a question to my son, asking him to describe me in three words. His response, “Courageous, brave and funny.” Those closest to me would add that they consider me resilient, intuitive, empathetic, loyal and dedicated, though I acknowledge that I also grapple with traits like stubbornness, pride, self-criticism, and a fear of failure - essentially, the quintessential Capricorn.

Through many years of experience, I’ve come to realise that my journey of learning and growth is an ongoing process, reminding me in the face of hurt, disappointments, and setbacks never to diminish my self-worth for the sake of someone else. This holds true for all of us in one form or another, whether at home or in the office. Stepping into a new year provides an opportunity to rise, reflect, and hit the reset button, if needed.

Success, a subjective concept, takes diverse forms for different individuals. I encourage you to comment on your own definition of success, recognising its unique significance to each of us.

I intend to share my thoughts more regularly in 2024 but in the meantime, and on behalf of Skin I’m In, I extend my heartfelt wishes for enlightenment and joy as you embark on the next phase of your life’s journey.

Warmly, Debra Ojumu
